Serine Lee

Bachelor of Dental Health Science
Griffith University

A published scientific researcher, avid writer, Bachelor of Dental Health Science student and now a 2022 GAF Scholar. We caught up with Serine to find out about all her endeavours and what drives her.

Welcome to the GAF community! How did you feel when you found out you were awarded the scholarship?

Thank you. I was surprised, but very ecstatic nonetheless! I feel very grateful and privileged to be the recipient of a GAF Scholarship, and I look forward to getting involved in the incredible community that awaits.

What motivates you to study for a Bachelor of Dental Health Science?

Dentistry seemed challenging and fun, and I’m always up for a challenge! I still vividly remember my old Chemistry teacher saying, “Serine, if there’s a challenge, you always rise up to it.” Her words resonated with me and inspired me to adopt the attitude of “do what seems impossible.”

Can you tell us how you became involved in research and your latest work as part of the Cellular and Molecular Degeneration Group at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research?

In light of the global pandemic that continues to affect me and those around me, I asked myself: what steps can I personally take in the stride to defeating the spectre of COVID-19? My unending desire to find answers to mysteries unsolved drove me to get involved with the QIMR. My specific area of focus was long COVID and its neurological effects. I have my incredible team and research supervisor to thank, who were willing to take me on board and unbelievably supportive along the way.

What extracurriculars and professional development opportunities will a George Alexander Foundation scholarship support you to undertake?

The possibilities are endless, and I cannot wait to explore them!

What are your goals for the future?

With a global pandemic, an economic downturn, and an impending world war…we are living in arguably what is the most divisive period of the 21st Century. With existential dread being the norm, I hope to weather challenges, become more resilient as a result, and most importantly, commit to a clear sense of purpose that drives me in all that I do.
