The GAF scholarship program at Australian Catholic University (ACU) aims to assist with the costs associated with students moving away from home to undertake study at the Ballarat, North Sydney and Strathfield campuses.
ACU's Ballarat and NSW campuses have a strong focus on the education and health related fields of study and this scholarship program specifically targets the skills gap and needs of regional communities.
The George Alexander Foundation Scholarship Program was established at the Australian Catholic University’s Ballarat campus in 2006, and welcomed its first cohort of scholars in 2007. When the program commenced, the Ballarat campus had approximately 600 students enrolled with 60–70 per cent coming from rural and regional areas. Today the Ballarat campus hosts almost 1,000 students. Since the program's inception, 63 ACU students have been awarded George Alexander Foundation Scholarships.
In 2018, a new George Alexander Foundation Scholarship Program was established at ACU's New South Wales campuses. The North Sydney and Strathfield campuses will welcome their first cohorts of GAF scholars in 2019.
"...being chosen for such an award has given me confidence and encourages me to be a better student..."
ACU offers five GAF scholarships annually to students studying at the Ballarat campus. As of 2019, each scholarship is valued at $22,500 and paid over the three to four year duration of an undergraduate degree.
The aim of the scholarships is to contribute towards the cost of living expenses of talented students to assist them in reaching their educational goals. The program is specifically for students from rural and regional areas who need to live away from home in order to undertake study at ACU's Ballarat campus.
