The GAF scholarship program at Australian Catholic University (ACU) aims to assist with the costs associated with students moving away from home to undertake study at the Ballarat campus.
ACU Ballarat has a strong focus on the education and health related fields of study and this scholarship program specifically targets the skills gap and needs of regional communities.
The George Alexander Foundation Scholarship and Bursary Program was established at the Australian Catholic University’s Ballarat campus in 2006, and welcomed the first cohort of scholars in 2007. When the program commenced, the Ballarat campus had approximately 600 students enrolled with 60–70 per cent coming from rural/regional areas. Today the Ballarat campus hosts more than 1,000 students including a small number of international students.
"...being chosen for such an award has given me confidence and encourages me to be a better student..."
ACU offers five GAF scholarships annually, each valued at $15,000 and paid over the three to four year duration of an undergraduate degree.
The aim of the scholarships is to contribute towards the cost of living expenses of talented students to assist them in reaching their educational goals. The program is specifically for students from rural and regional areas who need to live away from home in order to undertake study at ACU's Ballarat campus.
"Being awarded the GAF scholarship opened up so many doors for me. I became involved in student paramedic development at a national level."
The bursary program is aimed at the group of students studying vocational courses such as nursing, paramedicine and teaching who require funding to undertake placements. The financial strain caused by student placements can be eased by bursaries which can be used to pay for uniforms and equipment, cover travel costs, rent and general living expenses while on placement. This popular program receives a significant number of applications each year.
Further details on how to apply for either the scholarship or bursary programs can be found on the ACU website.
